Philip - thanks for this article, very powerful. The same effects on
both UK and American troops when they get back home. I wonder
how the Aussies are treated? Or the Germans, Italians and the
other combatants? Worth looking into sometime.
Read that Independent piece you quoted while on Holiday, about the
19 year-old who'd always wanted to serve in the army, but could not
abandon the army nor bear the thought of killing children. So the only
logical conclusion, to him, was to end his own life. Utterly heartbreaking.
Tony Benn - the original Right-On guy - knows his history, and is aware
of how things actually are. In an anti-war rally (pre-invasion) in London,
he was asked, "Well - don't you support the troops?"
Rather than dismiss this insulting and simplistic question with the contempt
it deserved, he replied "Of course I support the troops. And the best way
to support them is _not_ to send them into a war which isn't necessary,
isn't legal, and can only result in incalculable losses."
He went on to say, again from memory, that everyone says they support the
troops and rallies them to war. Nobody wants to know when - if - they get
back home.
Your comments about Bush de-funding the brain damage are yet to be heard
in the US, or are still caught up in the filters. As Sam Seder would say,
Un-Be- Lievable. Thought they would have reversed that once it had been
found out - they could pass it over as a mistake by an over-enthusiatic clerk.
But are they bothered? Nah. Just brazen it out.
You can just imagine. If this is the concern they have for our own troops,
what do they care for the citizens of countries to which we subject this
treatment? Our troops got Gulf War Syndrome from being in the area
a matter of months (albeit in the thick of things, but with at least some
protection).
If you'd like to know how the people of Iraq managed with such an
imposed environment, read John Pilger's "The New Rulers of the World".
In fact, look up John Pilger anyway - a totally solid character.
