Thank you for the article. Referencing the video links, I am
struck by the tactics used against the protesters - they are
similar to those used by Thatcher against protesters in the numerous strikes and riots.
The police come in very well prepared, and used disproportionate
methods. These attacks against the middle class - what
we used to call the working class (i.e. those who work for
their living) - are simply a demonstration of power, to put down
any idea of dissent.
The travelers - hippies, communes and general free- society
classes - were put out of business in a very brutal order under
Thatcher in the 1980's. This was just a softening up process, the
middle (or working) classes were going to be punished next. Any
ideas of protesting had to be put down.
The last - and most brutal - was the Poll-tax riots, which very
arguably led to the downfall of Thatcher. One had to register to
vote, and pay for the privilege, last introduced in the middle ages.
This tax - now abolished - meant the Lord of the manner paid the
same tax for living in a district (and voting there) as his butler.
Not acceptable, the UK said.
But the UK police can be only _so_ brutal against its citizens. I hate
to think of the price US citizens will pay when they finally wake up,
and demand their country back. The US record of state force
against their citizens is not regarded highly abroad.
