The Los Angeles Times today published a story of different liberal activists who all claim victory for the Democratic Party and demand that they push THEIR extremist views to stay in power. Some are understandable, planned parenthood has lost considerable funding to unconstitutional religious groups under the Bush years, but some are just counterparts to the extreme righties. Strict gun control and a ban on all automatic assault rifles is one of the big ones. Clearly, I'm a huge supporter of the constitution. I'm not saying that there are no flaws or potentially objectible clauses, but it is the framework and foundation for every law and government agency we have.
I don't like to see any amendment repealed or ignored in any other way than by a 2/3s vote of the nationd. Gun control is important and it's quite unfortunate that adults and children have been so misguided as to use them to make statements or get revenge on classmated or co-workers. None the less, the second amendment still reads:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
This doesn't imply and cannot be construed to imply that we have the right to a weapon to protect our home and family only. This clearly states that we are a nation that needs to protect ourselves. We have an army, but the founders agreed that having the government hold all the weapons would not be a good idea.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State..."
Allowing the public to only purchase single barrel shotguns, manual action rifles, and small pistols may make it a little more difficult for certain bad apples to commit gun crimes (already illegal) but will certainly make it impossible for much of the public to be safe when we fight a war on US soil or become ravaged with more "natual" distasters that leave communites under martial law for an extended period of time.
Don't blame me, look at the constitution.
Republican or Democratic, don't ignore the constitution.
