Halloween was a neat time of the year for me as a child; costumes, acting out, school parade and the sweets! There were home-made cookies and peanut brittle, store-bought candies, chocolates and fruits.
My last costume was made at home; I was a fortune teller. Since I really had learned to read the cards while living in Mexico, I walked around the room and offered my silly services.
Those were the days of "harmless" trick or treating... No razors, no poisons or drugs, or kidnappers in my neighborhood. It was one night of the year for a seven year old to celebrate a form of independence; walk the dark streets with your brown paper sack and beg for candy from complete strangers!
In Halloween, 1997, I woke up as the helper "Igor" from the Frankenstein monster movies; hunched over, dragging my left foot and unable to raise my arm and make it function... I laughed, "Well, this year I am Igor and I don't even need a costume!" It was a just trick or treat; it was the beginning of the end.
